Conference Committee Meeting

Last Night, May 4, 2011, the Conference Committee met at Stoweflake.  We were given a tour of the resort and are very excited about the opportunity to bring our state conference here.  The resort has a wonderful atmosphere that I think everyone will enjoy.  Their is a lot of facilities that we are able to use to do presentations as well as enjoy ourselves. There is a racquet ball court, weight room, dance studio with mirrors, outside recreation bike path, pool, spin room, and lots of opportunity for much more. You may also be able to schedule in a spa time to really feel refreshed.  If you would like to be a part of this November's conference or know someone who would be a great addition to our theme,  please contact Louise DeGuise at louise.deguise@gmail.com.  We would love to have our local Vermonters share their expertise as our theme is Vermont - An Adventure in Wellness!

Contact VT Senators & Representative

FIT Kids Act Reintroduced! Your Action Needed!Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI-3) reintroduced the Fitness Integrated With Teaching (FIT) Kids Act in March. The bills (S.576/H.R.1057) would bring attention to physical education programs around the country by requiring schools to report on the quality and quantity of physical education they provide. The legislation would also support professional development for physical education teachers, health education teachers, and administrators as well as make sure families receive information to live long and healthy lives.
Sen. Harkin (who chairs the Senate Committee with jurisdiction over education reform) has indicated he will include the provisions of the FIT Kids Act in his ESEA Reauthorization bill. However, a strong show of support in the form of co-sponsorships will send a signal to Harkin that his bill should be included. Support is needed in the House as well, to show the House Leadership the bill is important.
Please contact your Senators and Representatives to cosponsor the FIT Kids Act!

Moving Schools to Improve Health and Academic Performance

Let’s Move in School (LMIS), a national initiative to increase physical activity before, during, and after school, was introduced by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and its National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) on February 1, 2011.
Take a look at the LMIS Promotional Video!
In support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, the initiative helps youth achieve 60 minutes of physical activity before, during, and after school to improve health and academic performance. Let’s Move in School brings together national education and health leaders to redefine school-based physical activity and offer new leadership opportunities for physical education teachers. The Let's Move in School Web site equips physical education teachers, administrators, school boards, and parents with tools to create an active learning environment.
Get Moving – in 3 Active Steps:
1. REGISTER your school to host a LMIS celebration during National Physical Education and Sport Week. Schools that register by March 28, 2011 will have a chance to win a visit from a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. The first 10,000 schools to register will receive a LMIS poster.

2. SHOW the LMIS Promotional Video to others.
3. VIEW the LMIS Introductory Webinar (February 1) for more details and information.
