FIT Kids Act Reintroduced! Your Action Needed!Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI-3) reintroduced the Fitness Integrated With Teaching (FIT) Kids Act in March. The bills (S.576/H.R.1057) would bring attention to physical education programs around the country by requiring schools to report on the quality and quantity of physical education they provide. The legislation would also support professional development for physical education teachers, health education teachers, and administrators as well as make sure families receive information to live long and healthy lives.
Sen. Harkin (who chairs the Senate Committee with jurisdiction over education reform) has indicated he will include the provisions of the FIT Kids Act in his ESEA Reauthorization bill. However, a strong show of support in the form of co-sponsorships will send a signal to Harkin that his bill should be included. Support is needed in the House as well, to show the House Leadership the bill is important.
Please contact your Senators and Representatives to cosponsor the FIT Kids Act!
